Employment Profile 2008

Whitiora Community House (1983-1986)
Co-ordinator (Manager)

Foundation member, and Chairperson of Whitiora Community House Incorporated. Developed and delivered:

  • Continuing Education Programmes for woman
  • After school support and homework programmes for primary children
  • Sexual Abuse Support services for adolescents
  • Under 20 (young mums) maternity support services
  • Community –sentencing services for woman (referral from courts via Probation-Community Corrections)
  • Foundation member, and Chairperson of Whitiora Te Kohanga Reo. Delivery of total immersion (Te Reo Maori) pre-school education services

Hamilton Youth Resource Centre (1986-1989)
Co-ordinator (Manager)

  • Developed curriculum for ‘Food for Koha’ training programme (T.A.P. – T.O.P.)
  • Created Substance Abuse (prevention) resource material
  • Facilitated youth/whanau conflict resolution hui/processes with associated bodies e.g. Police,
  • DSW, School (this was pre: Child, Youth & Families services or legislation)
  • Developed a number of JV projects e.g Youth Magazine (Art-Makers); Time-out with Secondary Schools and Maori Students (Hillcrest, Fairfeild); Building of new Kohanga Reo facility (NZ Employment Services, RESTART Funders)

Child, Youth and Families Hamilton (1990)

  • Temp contract re: transfer of State-ward children through preparation of appropriate court documentation (5 weeks).
  • Youth Justice Social Worker (3 months): Temp position during re-establishment of DSW to CYF.

Maatua Whangai o Kirikiriroa (1990-1993)
Co-ordinator (Manager)

  • Undertook management and merger of four (4) Maatua Whangai services into one organisation (Maatua Whangai Justice, Maatua Whangai Court Services, Maatua Whangai DSW, Maatua Whangai Rangatahi)
  • Managed full time, part-time, practicum placement & voluntary staff
  • Outsourced and project managed a number of projects (prevention promotion) and new Maatua Whangai initiatives including; Maori Youth Diversion, Whanau Therapy Services, Whakapapa research for Whanau Hui (contracted to CYF); Community Training in Children Young Persons & Families Act for Maori Organisations; Maori Drama group; Driver License Programmes (pilot for Court re: reduction of Maori recidivist driver offending)

Waikato CHE (Crown Health Enterprise)
Project Developer for Waikato Hospital Health Marketing and Promotions Unit (1994), projects undertaken were:

  • Maori SID Reduction Project: Awakenings - an action research project that brought together 5 young mothers and supported them to find 'ways to create smokefree environs' & 'create wider awareness on how to reduce incidents of child morbidity' (Research for Promotion Development
  • Maori Dental Health Project: Nihoniho Whanau - promotion songs, characters, Maori language based pamphlets and posters on child dental care (project managed; promotional material created by Ange Pomare, Tiki O'Brien and the whanau of ? Wananga)

Rona Marketing (Self Employment – Business Projects)

  • Strategic Planning, Supervision and Workshop/Training Development and Facilitation (Te Roopu a Iwi o Te Arawa, Barnados Central North Island, Rape Crisis National AGM Taranaki,
  • Job Action (Waikato/ King Country and Hamilton); Delivery of workshops designed to facilitated long-term unemployed into work (Contract holders - Te Karere Matauranga Maori: Susan & Adrian Bryant).
  • Job Action Video Promotion (NZES); Produced and directed of a video that promoted and overviewed the delivery of this programme
  • Maori Congress CEMIS delivery (2 ½ year contract); Delivered Community Employment Mobile Information Services within the rohe of Tainui, Te Arawa and Mataatua (CEGS contract with Maori Congress Employment Committee). Services included one-to-one support, referral services and workshops primarily targeted at Maori Women in isolated areas.
  • Waka Tangata Project (Maori Congress/Commission of Maori Employment & Training); Review of Community Wage Program Dynamics of delivery within a Rural Sector – a three month project based in the Waikato/Maniapoto rohe.
  • NZ Employment Strategies (Commission of Maori Employment & Training) – Maori researcher amongst a team inclusive of Govt economists, Pacific researcher, Massey University and Ministry of Labour staff
  • Hamilton City Zero Tolerance to Family Violence Charter (Writing & Layout Design; Artwork by Tiki O'Brien);
  • Maori Housing Needs Assessment/Research – Northland & East Coast (Colmar & Brunton/ NZ Housing Dept);
  • Youth Employment Research (Ministry of Labour);
  • Mana Wahine Workshops (Taupo, Turangi, Te Awamutu, Cambridge, Hamilton, Te Kuiti);
  • Zero Tolerance to Whanau Violence Iwi Strategy: Ngati Tuwharetoa, Ngati Maniapoto Womens' Refuges - Te Whare Oranga Wairua (Taupo/Turangi), Taumaranui & Te Awamutu (my role - project design and facilitation of research model);
